Robert DeWitt honored by the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame

Robert DeWitt will be one of five individuals going into the Stockton Athletic Hall of Fame at its annual induction dinner and ceremony.
DeWitt played on the Pacific Tigers basketball team and graduated in 1970 with a degree in physical education, while earning a master's and teaching credential. He went on to teach math and coached basketball at Fremont Junior High School in Stockton from 1971 to '72, then coached a junior varsity basketball and taught at Stagg from 1972 to '73. Then the boy's head basketball coach at Tracy from 1974 to '77 and later followed Erinie Marcopuls as the head men's coach at Delta in 1978.
DeWitt stayed with the Mustangs from 1978 to '92 and led them to the state title in 1984 and to the semifinals in 1987.
He stepped down as the head coach in 1992, to coach men's tennis and now teaches classes that involve exercise science, sports and nutrition.
Volleyball
The Delta College volleyball team's 127-match conference winning streak was ripped to shreds as the Sacramento City defeated them in five, 23-30, 30-25, 21-30, 30-28, 15-11 Friday, Nov. 11 at Marcopulos Gym.
This was their first loss since the streak began with a victory against Santa Rosa on Nov. 10, 1995.
The Mustangs had a 2-1 lead, but couldn't finish off the Panthers.
The Playoffs are scheduled to begin on Nov. 22.
Wrestling
Benny Garcia, the number-one-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, moved to a heavier weight and still won the San Francisco State tournament championship at 149 pounds Saturday, Nov. 12.
The Mustangs finished ninth as a team. Caleb Mack was fifth at 133 pounds, and Ivan Posas was fourth at 189.
Men's basketball
The Mustangs came back from a 10-point deficit in the second half, as Mike Kirby's three-pointer with two minutes left them ahead of Modesto 63-58 and advanced to the final of the Sierra Tournament, Friday, Nov. 11. Kevin Bland led the Mustangs with 21 points.
