"A politico-military leader at the head of an authoritative power," is how Wikipedia describes "caudillo."

When "caudillo" is entered into the Encarta Encyclopedia one will find names like Francisco Franco, who was Spain's authoritarian ruler, Adolf Hitler who was a German chancellor, and Benito Mussolini, who was an Italian dictator.

"Military strongmen," is what you'll find when you look up "caudillos" in the sixth edition of Columbia Encyclopedia.

The Larousse Spanish/English dictionary defines "caudillo" as "leader."

Julia Rodriquez, co-advisor for, Caudillos, said, "I'm a native-born Mexican, and the closest word I know of to describe caudillo is 'patriot.'"

Joel Reyna, Jr. project coordinator of the High School Equivalency Program (HEP,) sent Lillian Rich, Spanish instructor, an e-mail to discuss the club's name.

On Wednesday, May 11, Rich responded with, "Asking a Latin American to meet with a group that knowingly calls itself 'caudillos' is like asking a Black person to sit down to dinner with the KKK. Change the name of your organization."

Caudillos Fuerza Unida was the new club on campus. The club has been sanctioned, along' with Puente and LULAC, for five years, with three years probation.

LULAC's mission was to increase awareness of the importance of higher education, community volunteering, and leadership roles among Latino students at Delta College.

Established in 1929 The League of Latin American Citizens is the nation's oldest and largest Hispanic organization in the United States.

Caudillos Fuerza Unida has been around since the 1930s. They have been helping immigrants from Mexico get their GED and learn English. They were the only organization on campus to offer those programs.

Timothy Anna, from University of Manitoba, e-mailed Caudillos in 1995 about understanding the roles of caudillos.

"I think we have not properly understood the roles of caudillos for three main reasons," he said.
