Delta scored fast and gave them a three-goal lead going into the half.
Sarah Watt scored five goals: one off a penalty while the Modesto goalie, Lorna Lynott, was ejected for 20 seconds after pushing the ball under water. Watt went up against another Lady Pirate and came out with a goal.
"It's still a hard shot," said Watt. "There still is pressure, so it's not an easy shot."
The Lady Pirates gave Delta a run for their money as they came back from a 6-3 deficit to tie the Lady Mustangs with the unanswered goals.
"They were swimming and really taking chances," said coach Mike Leabo.
Watt came out in the fourth to make the final goal in the contest, to put Delta up by one in a game they thought was theirs from the start, to beat Modest 7-6.
"We didn't know they'd come out that strong," said Leabo.
Freshman goalie Melisa Addison recorded 10 saves and six steals in the victory.
The Lady Mustangs recorded a 9-3 loss to the Lady Blue Devils in the second game.
"Merced (has a) very good physical defense," said Leabo.
Watt added two more goals on the day and Christine Setness scored the other one. Addison recorded nine saves and four steals.
Over the weekend, Lebo found out the Lady Mustangs are up for a tough game Friday, Nov. 11. They have to face Merced for the fifth time this season who they have lost to four times.
"They have beat us 14 or 15 consecutive times," said Leabo, "but we have a good conference. Everyone was above .500."
Getting ready for the fifth meeting with Merced, Addison says her team is confident to play Merced, who has an overall record of 23-10 and 5-1 in league.
"We are just as confident as the first time, and we will go in aggressive and hope for the best," she said.
Delta will take on the Lady Pirates at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill.
