In any sport it is essential to jump out to an early lead, gain momentum and put the pressure on the other team. No team knows this better than the Mustang men's water polo squad. In one week they dominated a Solano College team 15-1 and came up short against Merced College 11-13.

In the Solano slaughter, the Mustangs jumped out to a 6-0 first quarter lead. In the second, they extended that lead by five more goals. The third quarter didn't change much, as they tacked on three more unanswered scores. In the final period, with action slowed down, Mustang Cody Terlouw nailed the final Delta goal of the afternoon, and a determined Solano team scored with two minutes remaining.

Delta goalkeeper Andrew Grafius had three solid shutout quarters before being substituted out. Goals came from an uncanny 10 different players, including three for team captain Jen Young, who played sparingly in the second half. Nick Krieger-Thomas also had a big day, with three goals.

"We emphasized counterattack. Our bench mob stepped up and performed. I was dependant on the assists of Cameron Heberly," said Krieger-Thomas. "We all work hard at practice, especially Joe Daus and this is the result you get."

Other scorers on the afternoon were; K.C. Drake, Derrick Davis, Nick Ishi, Michael Kemether, Chris Tunquist, and Erick Weisz, who scored twice.

"We pressed hard and scored a lot of goals, that was our gameplan," said Young.

In the battle among division leaders, Merced jumped out to a quick four-goal advantage, before Delta could battle back to close the period down 3-5.

"Their number eight is fast, he burned us early. They jumped out and kept it, we just couldn't recover," said Mustang coach Larry Huiras.

The Mustangs fought uphill all game. They got hot in the final period, outscoring Merced 4-1. K.C. Drake and Jen Young led the fourth quarter charge. Drake had a huge steal that led to a Nick Ishi goal. Young floated the initial goal of the period over the opposing keeper's head and dealt the assist to Drake. It was ultimately too little and too late.

"We struggled to play as a team," said Young.

In a wide-open conference this is not how Delta wanted to wrap up their regular season, but confidence is high amongst the players that the post-season will bring victory.
