On the biggest stage yet in the cross-country season, Jessica Montenegro smoked the Big Seven Championship trail en route to All Conference honors. Montenegro has paced the women's team throughout the season, and last weekend's conference championships in Sacramento was no different. She finished in a solid time of 22:10. Freshman Lindsay Boulay finished behind Montenegro, but missed out on conference honors. The women's team only ran these two runners.
According to cross-country teams' coach Dan King, both women have made huge strides this season and their hard work will take them far in the sport.
The men's team placed sixth in the nine-team field. David Zevely was the first Mustang to complete the four-mile course. The rest of the team included Omar Parra, Edgar Parra, Manjit Sandhu, and Lance Walkington. All have become stronger throughout the season, and Edgar Parra chose the right time to have a breakout meet.
"Edgar ran the race of his season," said King.
An unexpected injury to Omar Parra put a damper on the meet. The Mustangs felt they could have finished in a better spot. Although these things happen on game day, it is still a tough pill to swallow. The team will have an opportunity this weekend at the NorCal championship meet in Salinas to make another statement.
"The men's team has to run on all cylinders at the same time. This is something we have not been able to accomplish all season," King continued. "They have the potential to run with most of the best teams in Northern California. We have to put it all together all on the same day. All of our hard work is done. If these young people wish to qualify for the state meet, it will be up to them and the team."
The NorCal meet will dictate who qualifies for the State Championship. There are lots of high hopes from the Mustangs' stable, and they have a puncher's chance to qualify.
