The band Lying Awake has been together for over a year, 385 days to be exact, but yet they speak with such a maturity level, you would think they have been in this scene for decades. Lying Awake is comprised of Jon on lead vocals, Benny on guitar and Jake on drums.
The band started when Benny, the drummer, met Jon "It started with Jon and I, we met at the Black water café." A week later Benny's band broke up and he contacted Jon through his old drummer, and then joined forces with Jon to form Lying Awake.
Lying Awake is showing people that they can play to packed venues and still have their beliefs intact. They are a rock band with Christian beliefs. The fans that listen to their music do not seem to mind, because we all have something that we believe in. The name Lying Awake, came from Jon. "It came from the fact of me just lying in bed awake. I thought it was a cool name."
Lying Awake's music is very diverse; calling them a post hardcore band is putting them into one category, when they fit into many. As for collaborating with other musicians, that is really something the guys will have to think about. "We won't collaborate because we are picky about who we choose," said Jon. October 29th was their last local show, as they are taking a break to spend time with their families and work on the new record. They want the new record to be enjoyed by their fans.
"We still want to keep the same element and feeling," said Benny. "We try to find a happy medium so we don't shut this guy out or that guy out." As far as writing the lyrics is concerned, Jon has a way of doing so.
"When you come up with an idea, you just run with it. But you want to go a step ahead." As the music matures so does the band members. "We're more mature now, as musicians and as human beings," said Jon. The guys from Lying Awake are moving forward with their music, and they are thankful for all the support.
"The fan support is the reason why we're in this band," Jon said.
Lying Awake have been keeping busy. They had a show at the Blackwater Café here in Stockton on October 27, and a show at Kingdom Koffee in Modesto on October 29. To check out the rest of the tour dates just go to www.myspace.com/lyingawake or to their official website at www.lyingawakemusic.com.
