Mustang roundup: wrestlers sail to top

Delta College's wrestling team placed ninth in the West Valley Tournament out of 19 teams, Saturday, Oct. 15.

The Mustangs' Benny Garcia, 141 pounds was undefeated,going 5 for 0, taking first in his division and was named outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Caleb Mack, 133 pounds went 4 for 2, taking fifth in his division, Bobby Cearley, 184 pounds went 3 for 3 and took eighth. Kenny Keller, 197 pounds went 4 for 2 and took fifth.



Men's water pole



Delta outscored Modesto Junior College 9-3 in the second half, but the Mustangs couldn't overcome the damage done in the first half. The Pirates edged Delta 13-12, Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Jen Young and Thomas Dietrich scored three goals apiece, Sine Oung had two goals and goalkeeper Andrew Grafius recorded six saves .

Delta fell behind Diablo Valley 13-1, Saturday, Oct. 15 at Pleasanton.

Derrick Davis and Dietrich led with three goals each and Young scored two goals.

The Mustangs pick up an 11-6 victory over Ohlone as Young and Mike Kemether scored three goals in Pleasanton and Grafius grabbed 19 saves on the day.



Women's water polo



Sarah Watt scored eight goals and Elise Schwartz had three to lead the Mustangs the Rams 11-6, Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Melisa Addison recorded six saves and two assists.

Delta College lost to Chaffey 16-5 and defeated Cypress (ranked third) 11-10 on the first day of the River City Invitational at Sierra College, Friday, Oct.14.

Watt had six goals, Christine Setness scored five goals, Schwartz scored the winning goal against Cypress with 20 seconds left, and Addison had 12 saves on the day.

Mt. San Antonio beat Delta 13-6 in the and lost to the host team 14-5.

Watt led the Mustangs with five goals and Schwartz scored one goal in game one.

Watt scored three goals and Katrina Cockerill and Sarah Berrien scored one goal apiece for Delta in game two. Mustang goalie Addison had 13 saves and six steals over both matches.



Volleyball



Frances Sandor had 18 kills and three blocks to help the Mustangs remain unbeaten, as they beat Diablo Valley 3-0, Wednesday, Oct. 12. Breanne Zellmer had 13 kills and 16 digs, Hillary Rasmussen had 48 assists and 11 digs, and Jordane Brenkwitz had 22 digs for the Mustangs.



Men's soccer



Cosumnes River defeated Delta 4-1 Friday, Oct. 14.

Alex Reyes tied the game for the Mustangs on an assist from Jorge Arias, but the Hawks came back to score three late goals to shut down Delta. Hector Arredondo recorded six saves.
