Delta's speech and debate team brought home more awards from their second competition. The Mustangs traveled to Santa Rosa College Oct. 7 through 9, where topics such as judicial activism, legalizing prostitution, Proposition 73 (parental notification of a pregnant minor's abortion), euthanasia, FEMA's role in the government, and economic rebound post-Hurricane Katrina were discussed.

"I am quite proud of the accomplishments of these students. They are a brand new all-novice team, and they are competing at an intercollegiate level against some of the best schools in the country and winning," said speech coach Anna Johnson. Some of the notable colleges competing at the tournament were UC Davis, UC Berkeley, San Francisco State, and Saint Mary's College, as well as many other two- and four-year colleges.

Three of the four Delta debate teams took home awards, and three of the five top speaker awards went to Delta students.

Matthew Swanson took home third place in Impromptu Speaking, third place Top Speaker Award in Debate, and was a quarter-finalist in Debate. Tim Transon was a finalist in Impromptu Speaking, quarter-finalist in Debate, and received second place Top Speaker Award. Stuart Inmann took fourth place Top Speaker Award and semi-finalist in Debate. Stephen Wilcox II and Thorstein Himle were quarter-finalists in Debate, and Cheryl Flaherty was a Finalist in Informative Speaking.

"Our display at the first two competitions this year have made us pretty noticeable on the intercollegiate circuit, but we definitely have a long road ahead to nationals," said Johnson, "The team is clearly very strong in debate, and the next step is for them to focus on their individual competitive events, such as informative or persuasive speaking, so that we have a well-rounded array of competitive events."

The Delta students who competed in this tournament were Becky Cubillo, Cheryl Flaherty, Thorstein Himle, Stuart Inmann, Alicia Loza-Ponce, Quiana Robinson, Glenda Slaughter, Alice Smith, Matthew Swanson, Tim Transon, and Stephen Wilcox II.
