The Delta College cross-country team had butterflies in their stomachs in their second invitational, of the year.

Most of the team was battling the stomach flu, but still gutted out the four-mile course.

The Beaver Invitational hosted by American River College, was held at Folsom High School in Sacramento.

"Our team was met with a serious bout of stomach flu that impacted four of our runners Saturday morning. All but one of our men's team had the flu. We are now just getting healthy," said Mustangs cross-country coach Dan King.

The Mustang's top finishers were Jessica Montegro, who kept pace for the women's team, and Justin Shefell, who jumped ahead of the rest of the men's team.

"Jessica ran in her first college meet and ran wonderfully," commented King. He continued, "They both ran good, excellent races."

The young team, composed entirely of freshman led by runner Omar Parra, has long-term goals in mind. They hope to build around a strong core of talent throughout this season and on to next year.

The Mustang's long distance runners will have another chance to shine and will be healthier at the Lou Vasquez Invitational in San Francisco, Thursday, Sept. 29.
