William Kenneth Anttila started the local invitational to be held at Delta College some 40 years ago, and after he retired 22 years ago, the college decided to tack on "WKA" to the tournament's name.
The Mustangs showed Attila proud when they drowned their competition, as they beat St. Mary's, a last-minute fil-in, 17-8, then Cabrillo 15-2 Friday, Sept. 16. They went on beat Foothill 17-1 and Ohlone 11-3, to finish 4-0, the first time Delta has gone 4-0 in tournament play since the '90s according to Attila and head coach Larry Huiras.
"We have really started to step it up," said Huiras. "It was nice team effort, but Andrew made saves left and right."
"I've gotten a lot better since high school," said freshmen Andrew Grafius.
"We have an awesome goalie," said team captain Jen Young. "All of the starters are fast and deep, and (with substituting) we don't lose any talent."
Also this year, the tournament was the Big Seven Conference verses the Coast Conference, where the Big Seven remained undefeated throughout the two-day event, going 16-0.
Thomas Dietrich led Delta with nine goals, K.C. Drake shot for five goals; Mike Kemether had six goals; Erik Weisz recorded five goals, Young had seven goals, Chris Olson and Chris Tunquist made two and Grafius recorded 31 saves in the four games.
The Mustangs will head to Fremont for the Ohlone Tournament Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24.
