Roomates, can you live with them?

Pamela Kohler

Issue date: 9/23/05 Section: Opinion
Most people are smacking themselves in the face for the first weeks of their move because of bad roommate judgment. I am hopeful after you read this you make good decisions on you living arrangements, preventing you from the rigid facial scarring.

I feel like I star in a reality TV show sometimes. I live with 2 girls who are complete sweethearts, and honestly I am lucky matters within our household are not worse. I'm here to warn those of you who are thinking of moving out, even your two closest friends may have some traits that will not become evident until a few weeks of living together.

There are aspects of every human that are annoying, rude or foul.

These traits will likely go undetected until you move in with them by then the friendship is completely ruined, so why put the relationship through such torment?

My advice; move in with a same sex buddy that you never really had a chance to bond with, but is trustworthy.

Each person in my household has a different lifestyle, and daily schedule. This is beneficial because we rarely see each other preventing fights to occur. I am the workaholic. I work and go to school all of the time. When I am at home I'm usually sleeping or studying in my room. Hence my newest nickname "Grandma Pam."

My other roommate, Elle is taking a couple classes at MJC as well as working at a restaurant/bar 5 nights out of the week.

I see Meg, my third roommate, in passing quite often. Usually enjoying the leisure's of life, hanging out with friends and watching movies. All 3 of us are social, Meg is the fortunate one who enjoys free-time most often. The constant cloud of smoke surrounding her and her friends never annoyed me, it was the consequential munchies to soon come after as well as the obnoxious laughing at 3am on a school night.

The guilty roommate isn't confronted until she is inebriated, then we approach her with the utmost care and love. After the dirty work is done with, we step away from the problem and it is forgotten.
