There is no place like home, just ask the Lady Mustangs soccer squad, who have jumped out to an early two-game home winning streak.
Speed, conditioning, and depth seem to be a winning combination. Their opponents ran out of gas early, which opened up the transition game to break-away runs. Some of these fast breaks seem overwhelming, leading to rushed shots and blown chances to score.
"We have a deep team, we can sub[stitute] away and run the opposing teams into the ground," explained striker Megan Domench.
Coach Lloyd Ratto's plan seems to be working as the Lady Mustangs have allowed only one goal while punching in eight opportunities.
"We are getting better and play wider each game," said Ratto.
Working the entire field will become increasingly important, as the team will be playing tougher competition in the near future.
While still early in the season, team chemistry is at a high.
"We act like sisters and stick up for each other all around school," said fullback Colby Munoz.
On the field there is still some experimenting going on. Players are still fighting for starting slots, and Coach Ratto is looking for the most dominating line up. The only safe position is goalkeeper Kianna Williamson, who has been playing outstanding.
"I have a lot of help in front of me," said Williamson.
Even while outclassing their first few opponents, the team still has many areas to work on, says Ratto. They will need to keep the ball out of the air, which has been a weakness.
Quick and physical teams should push them to their limit. Nailing crosses and finishing efficiently will be the key to extending their winning streak.
