Women's water polo brings home Delta's first tournament vicotry in five years

The Lady Mustangs dominated at the Cuesta Tournament in San Luis Obispo as they won their first tournament in the five-year history of Delta's program. They came on top after defeating the eighth-ranked team in the state, Groomont 8-7, and beat L.A. Valley 16-5 Friday, Sept. 9. They beat Cerritos 9-8 and No. 11-ranked Cuesta 11-7, Saturday, Sept. 10.
Sarah Watt led Delta with three goals, and Katrina Cockerill, Christine Setness and Elise Schwartz each scored two and Melissa Addison recorded seven saves in game one.
Cockerill and Schwartz led the Lady Mustangs in game two with three goals each. Watt, Setness, Sabrina Connor, Addison and Sarah Berrien each scored two goals.
Watt scored five goals against Cuesta and three against Cerritos as Delta grabbed a 7-2 lead in the finals.
Cockerill, Christine Setness and Sarah Berrien had two goals each against Cerritos, and Schwartz had three against Cuesta.
Addison, who never played the position before, had 15 saves in the two games.
Men's water polo
Delta's men started their season 1-1 as they beat Santa Rosa 10-7 and lost to Cuesta 8-5 in the Gene Nyquist Tournament, Friday, Sept. 9
Jen Young led the Mustangs against Cuesta with two goals, and Thomas Dietrich had five goals against Santa Rosa.
Delta lost to Merced 8-4, but came back to defeat Cabrillo 15-6 for the last day of the tournament at West Valley College.
K.C Drake, Young, Dietrich and Nick Ishii each had one goal, and Andrew Grafius had 10 saves against Merced.
Young scored seven goals in the Cabrillo match. Chris Tunquist scored two goals, and Sine Oung, Derrick Davis, Drake and Thomas Dietrich each had one goal. Grafius had four saves.
Volleyball
The Lady Mustangs defeated Bakersfield 3-0 30-13, 30-19, 30-20 and Reedley 3-0 30-16, 30-24, 30-22 to win the Reedley Classic, Saturday, Sept. 10.
Ellie Cornfoot had 16 kills, 11 aces, 22 digs and five blocks, Hilary Rasmussen had 58 assists and 10 digs, Frances Sandor had 23 kills and seven blocks, Karen Kroplin had 14 kills and six blocks, Alicia Karver had 12 kills and five blocks in the tournament.
Cornfoot was named the tournament MVP and Rasmussen was named to the all-tournament team.
Women's soccer
Delta shut out Hartnell 3-0 as they opened the season Thursday, Sept. 1.
Deidra Rodriguez, Megan Domech, and Ariana Cuevas each scored a goal. Rodriguez, Domech, and Emily Viera each had an assist. Goalkeeper Kianna Williamson had five saves.
Wrestling
The Mustangs Beat Mount Sac. 26-19 and Golden West 25-23, but fell to the defending champs (Bakersfield) 30-20.
Benny Garcia went 3-0, Kenny Keller, Vincente Marino, Caleb Mac, and Bobby Ceelry all went 2-1.
