With seven awards, Green Day stole the show at MTV's 2005 Video Music Awards

American Idol´s Kelly Clarkson belts out "Since You´ve Been Gone" for the show´s end performance .




The 2005 Video Music Awards were held in Miami, Florida on Sunday, August 28 with lively host Diddy. The punk band Green Day opened the show up with an emotional performance of their song "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," followed by Diddy's dance number.

The first awards of the night were given to rapper Kanye West and American Idol's Kelly Clarkson for best male and female video.

There was a colorful performance by Ludacris featuring Bobby Valentine for the song "Pimpin all over the world." The best rock video award was given to rockers, Green Day.

The Best R&B video went to Alicia Keys for her video "Karma." Singer Shakira belly danced and sung her song "La Tortua" with guest Alejandro Sanz. Usher awarded Missy Elliot with the Best Dance Video award for the song "Lose Control." R. Kelly sung and acted out his song "Trapped in the Closet." The Killers gave an electric performance of their song "Mr. Brightside" which ended with fireworks. Rapper Ludacris won the award for Best Rap Video for "Number One Spot."

One of the highlights of the night was Diddy's tribute to the late Notorious B.I.G. Diddy managed a huge orchestra and had guest rapper Snoop Dogg perform. The MTV2 award was given to the rock underdogs Fall Out Boy who beat out their fellow contenders and friend My Chemical Romance as well as Akon, Mike Jones, Daddy Yankee, and the Bravery for the moon man.

Rapper Fat Joe presented three performers from the Latin community one of which was Daddy Yankee who came through the audience singing "Gasolina."

Coldplay performed their song "Speed of Sound." The Best Pop Video went to Kelly Clarkson for the video "Since You've Been Gone." Kanye West and Jamie Foxx got the crowd moving with their song "Gold Digger." The Best New Artist award went to The Killers. Mariah Carey sung two of her hit songs in a blue dress surrounded by water. The Gorillaz won the award for Best Breakthrough Video.

50 Cent performed a medley of his songs. My Chemical Romance did a surprise performance as the " Helena" dancer did a ballet dance around the stage. The award for Viewers Choice went to Green Day. They beat out Snoop Dogg, Kelly Clarkson, My Chemical Romance, and Shakira. Green Day was also given with the video of the year award.

Overall, Green Day were the reigning kings on the VMA's, going home with seven moon men. Missy Elliot, Kelly Clarkson, The Gorillaz and Gwen Stefani received two moon men each. Kanye West, Ludacris, The Killers, Fall Out Boy, and Alicia Keys all went home with one award. The night ended with a performance by Kelly Clarkson singing "Since You've Been Gone".
