After two strong performances by sophomore Dyer, the Delta softball team stood just one game away from traveling to Roseville, Saturday, May 7.
The Lady Mustangs took out the College of Sequoias 5-0, and Sierra 2-0, to give them a bye for the final game on Sunday to play the winner of the losers' bracket.
Each of Saturday's games was a one-inning victory as the Mustangs (38-4) scored their seven runs in the first inning.
Amanda Vickers and Jessica Gonzales singled before the Giants chose to intentionally walk Dani Caldwell to load the bases. This put them in trouble, as Veronica Castro received a base on balls, which brought in Vickers. Dyer came up to the plate to blast the ball to the center field fence to score Delta's last three runs, to beat the College of Sequoias 5-0.
"After we took over in the first, we handed it over to Meghan and the defense, which did the trick," said Delta Coach Peter Turner.
The crowd experienced a double take as Vickers and Gonzales got on base with line drive singles to center. Vickers advanced to third on a stolen base and Caldwell hit a line to center to give the Mustangs their solo runs of Game 2. Dyer pitched a compete game, striking out nine Wolverines (29-13) in the 2-0 shutout win.
"We jumped on them early and they had to play catch up," said Turner.
Due to hailing weather the final games were rescheduled for Tuesday, May 10, where Modesto beat the College of Sequoias and went on to play Sierra, but the Lady Wolverines escaped a 3-2 extra-inning victory to take on Delta.
The Lady Mustangs were faced with a team they have beaten five times prior to the championships game, but didn't have doubts about getting the victory.
"Who ever you are playing, it's tough to beat them six times," said Turner.
Delta went on defeat Sierra as both teams were hitting the ball and playing their defense. Teressa Gomez, shortstop for the Lady Wolverines didn't allow a ball passed her and only one Lady Mustangs was safe after hitting in her direction.
"We moved the ball very well," said Turner. "Sometimes you just hit it right to them."
Dyer went to the mound for a three-hitter, striking out 11 and with her defense they never let a Lady Wolverine passed second.
"We did 2/3 of what we do good," said Turner. "We had great pitching and defense."
Bonnie Farris led Delta going 2-3, Dyer picked up the RBI-single in the fourth, for the 1-0 shutout.
"I just got lucky," said Dyer. "(Now) I want state and I think we are fully capable of doing that if we go out and do want we have been leavening the past 10 months."
With five sophomores playing their final games for Delta hope to and fun and bring the title back to the home of he Mustangs.
"I'm excited. It's good to go back to state," said sophomore catcher Caldwell. "And it's really good to now I'm going with Meghan. We've have been around for a while."
