It was a steamy Saturday afternoon at Nick Cecchetti Field as the Delta men's baseball team went up against Big Valley East rivals, the Beavers of American River College.

Stating pitcher for the Mustangs, freshman Ernie Lopez came in with a record of three wins and two losses, with an earned run average of 4.75.

The first inning got off to a rocky start for Lopez, as he gave up two doubles down the right field line, giving the Beavers a 3-0 lead. As the Beavers were still threatening in the first inning, with two men on and two men out, freshman Riley Gavello, center fielder came up with a head-first diving catch in center field, saving two runs from scoring.

After Gavello made the catch, the Mustangs were ready to face a left-handed pitcher for the Beavers, sophomore Jason Maes, with a record five wins and one loss, and an earned run average of 3.17.

The Mustangs got off to a quick start as freshman Shane Farmer led off with a walk and quickly stole second base. The hits started to come around as freshman DH, Mike Bentley, drove in Farmer with a single. Outfielder freshman Chris Lester then brought another runner home as shortstop Chris Curtis made an error, bringing the game even closer.

Sophomore Eli Rimes came up with two men on first and second that same inning, scoring the tying run, making it a 3-3 ball game in the bottom of the first.

The game was getting more exciting as the runners made a double steal, putting runners on second and third to bring up shortstop Freshman Grant Beyer. Beyer then hit a flare to right center, bringing home two more runs, making it a 5-3 lead for the Mustangs.

For the next three innings, both sides were shut down as Lopez gave up only two base hits.

The Mustangs also had their chance to blow the game wide open as they left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth.

The score stayed 5-3 until the top of the fifth, when American River went on a hitting parade, scoring nine runs. The Mustangs used three pitchers to get out of the top of the fifth inning, ending when right-handed pitcher Jeremy Harbottle of the Mustangs stopped the bleeding.
