It's time for Delta students to exercise their right to vote.

ASBG elections are quickly approaching. On Tuesday, May 10 and Wednesday 11, all students are invited to elect the candidates who will to represent the school for next year.

Carmen Avitia, ASBG president, and Pierre Tapia, senator of activities, are both running for the presidency. Each candidate is running their own campaigns in hopes of being elected as ASBG President and pursuing their plans for ASBG and the school next year.

Elliot Castro, student representative to the board of trustees, is running for vice president. Kimberlee Craig, senator of advocacy, is running for the same position for the third year.

Alberto Aguilar is running for senator of student body ID's, Brad Padgitt is running for executive secretary, Royce Santos is running for senator-at-large, and Marcos Villanueva is running for senator of committees.

The campaign for presidency is unique in that it is the only position where one candidate can be elected into the position.

Both Avitia and Tapia have been enjoying the campaigning process. Avitia has found it enjoyable and Tapia believes it has been great.

"I'm enjoying it," said Avitia. "It's my passion, being with people."

"It's been a great campaign," said Tapia. "I love talking and listening to people."

Avitia and Tapia have similar plans for the upcoming school year, but each candidate plans to pursue those plans differently.

Avitia plans to focus on the students more next year. As the ASBG slogan states, she wishes to "promote student life."

"Promote student life. That's what I want to do," said Avitia. "I want to get the students involved and make history."

Tapia also wants to get the students more involved, but by providing more student activities throughout the year.

"I want to establish student committees to review events and brainstorm new ones," said Tapia. "Because only the students know what they want."

There is no question that Avitia and Tapia are not necessarily running against each other, but instead running to represent the Delta students.

"I don't believe there is a better candidate," said Avitia. "It is not a competition for me, I'm running for the students."

"My campaign is not necessarily based on posters and signs," said Tapia. "It is about talking to the people and hearing what they have to say."

Both candidates are seen in the quad, where they talk to students and give them more information on what their plans are for the upcoming year.

The election will be held May 10 and 11 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Quad near the Joe Serna Jr. Amphitheater. A photo ID is required to vote.
