Having a car to come to Delta College is a problem (spending time to find parking). But not all students have a car and that is a problem too. Fortunately, public transportation exists.

All cities have public transportation that helps people who do not have a car to travel to their job, school or anyplace they want to go.

Stockton is not a big city, but as any city, it has public transportation: the San Joaquin Regional Transit District (RTD). But how helpful is it?

RTD provides many benefits to people who need their services.

"It gives them the opportunity to get to the places they need to go, as students who don't own a car, yet they could take public transit," Director of Business Kari Wilson said. Not only does public transportation benefit those who ride the bus, it also helps every person who drives, and who lives in Stockton.

"Also, it gets cars of the road. That benefits those who do not even ride the bus. There are fewer cars on the road and environmentally is very beneficial to take a car off the road which can pollute," Wilson added. Those are just of the benefits of the system.

Certain buses come close to Delta. Those routes are: 10, 6, and Hopper routes 91 and 93 (both hoppers stop at Shima parking lot). But if those buses are not available, almost every bus meets behind Western Mall a few yards from campus (routes 5, 1, 16, 8, 11, 13, 2, 37, 6, hopper 91, 93)

A bus comes approximately every 40 to 45 minutes. "It depends on the route and the ridership demand," Wilson said. Fortunately, there are other options; if someone missed a bus, he or she could get another route that goes close to the destination wanted or wait the 40 to 45 minutes.

Every bus has a schedule; unfortunately, not all buses follow it. Sometimes they come early or late. But all have explanation, and if a bus is running late, it could be for many reasons.

"It could be excessive traffic, it could be there is a car accident that delays them, or it could be ridership; maybe there are a lot of people getting on," Wilson said, and this is understandable; humans are not perfect.

There have been some complaints from people and students about the RTD service. For them, it would be good if the bus would pass every 20 to 25 minutes but RTD has a schedule set that works fine for them and for many other people.

RTD is the only public transportation company in Stockton, and the job they are doing is great. Stockton is getting bigger every year, but people can be sure that if they don't have a car, or their car broke down, one of the best options is to ride the bus.
