Delta College's Center for Microscopy and Applied Sciences held its annual open house Tuesday, April 19.

The community was invited to tour the center, which opened fall 2003. Guests were able to learn about the programs that are offered, were informed about various microscopes and had chances to look at specimens, both biological and inorganic, through microscopes and photographs.

"The purpose of the open house was to inform the college, community and surrounding high schools about the microscopy program that the center provides," said Catherine Martin, president of the Delta Microscopy Society, a local affiliated society of the Microscopy Society of America.

"We wanted to educate them on what it (the program) is, what we do and to get them excited about sciences," said Martin.

"The program has been around since the 1970s and is the only one that is offered in Northern California and one of only two that is offered in the country," said Martin, "The other facility that offers the program is located in Madison, Wisconsin."

The SJDC microscopy program is nationally recognized and has had many successes, including being elected the number-one program in the state and a national publication listing the program as the best and most innovative program and services in the community, junior and technical colleges, according to the program's pamphlet.

There are no prerequisites to enter the two-year program. Students interested in the program can prepare for certification as a microscope technologist in biological or materials.

Silvia Magallanez, a Delta College student, was one of many who attended the event. She was attracted by the architectural design and the mystery of what the building was and what it had to offer.

"It has always been mysterious to me and the open house was a wonderful opportunity to learn about it," said Magallanez.

"I have learned that there is a whole other world," said Magallanez, "and there is much to learn beyond just basic curriculum."
