The Glass Menagerie is on stage now until April 17 at Stockton Civic Theatre. This play is dramatic yet funny at the same time.

The cast consists of; Jeremy Forbing, who is Tom, the son, Judy Caruso Williamson who plays Amanda ,the mother, Kristen Mager who is Laura, the daughter and Carl Johanson, who plays The Gentleman Caller.

Forbing; who is an experienced actor performing at other regional theatres portrays Tom better than ever. Williamson, who has performed with Stockton Civic since 1960, enhances the image of what a quirky single mother would be in the 30s. Mager, who attends Delta College and has also worked with various theatres, plays a timid home girl with a crippled leg. Johanson, who makes his first appearance with Stockton Civic, plays the Gentleman Caller.

Director Paul Bengston brings out the best in the cast. With credits from working in New York at the HB Studios and at the Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center, to being an actor, director, stage manager, and producer on and off Broadway and also a director of talent of Universal TV and ABC network this show sure lights up the stage.

The plot is about a family in the 30s whose father has abandoned them. The son, Tom, then has to provide for his mother and sister at a dead end at a shoe factory. But Tom feels and dreams of a better life than the one he is being stuck with.

The mother, Amanda, is a peculiar woman who believes in old Southern traditions. She wishes her daughter, Laura, to be married and have a family and place of her own. The only problem is that Laura has a disability that shy's her away from everything in life except for her exquisite glass collection.

The Glass Menagerie is written by Tennessee Williams. He used his own family experiences to inspire him writing this production. This play first opened in Chicago, December 26, 1945.

With its great success and rave reviews Menagerie moved to New York City where it played 561 performances and won many awards including The New York Critics Circle Award.

This play went down in history as Williams best work of all. The portrayal of a struggling family in the 30's captures what American theatre brings to life.

As I was watching this play, I felt a part of the olden times in me. Even obviously I wasn't born back then, learning about the past and watching it come to life in front of me was wonderful.

The Stockton Civic Theatre is located at 2312 Rose Marie Lane. For more information you may reach the box office at (209) 473-2424 or the business office at (209) 473-1502.
