Softball team picks up season-opening win against crosstown rivals

Megan Dyer completed seven innings in Delta's first matchup with Modesto Jr. College and recorded 12 strikeouts and a 6-1 victory, Tuesday, Feb. 8.
Freshman Lauren Langrey went 4-4 with two RBI, off a double and triple, and sophomore catcher Dani Caldwell ended any chance for Modesto as she hit a three-run homer in the sixth. Sophomore Roni Castro was 1-3 with one RBI.
Baseball
Bret Bruneel pitched a scoreless five innings in the 3-2 victory over College of the Sequoias. Owen Simmons came in to snag the win, but not after two runs came in the eighth as the Mustangs were down by one.
Shane Farmer went 2-4, with a solo homer and a RBI, to aid in their first win Tuesday, Feb. 8 and Grant Beyer was 2-3, with a double and a RBI.
Men's basketball
Delta added one more win to their undefeated season after a 89-50 victory over the Storm Tuesday, Feb. 8, even with star point guard Chris Walker out with the flu.
The mustangs outscored Napa 13-4 and forced 11 turnovers.
Kyle Huggett led Delta with 17 points, and Sam Kirby had 13.
Women's Basketball
The Lady Mustangs kept a seven-point lead over Napa Valley during the entire game including a six-minute stretch where Delta didn't score.
Delta snatched for five steals in the last five minutes to beat the Lady Storm 65-53 in their hunt for a fourth league victory.
Jennifer Layton led the lady Mustangs with 15 points, while their defense held Napa's Bernadette White to 25, as she scored 58 against Sacramento City last week.
Swimming and diving
The men took second while the women took sixth of 13 teams in the NorCal relay Tournament Saturday, Feb. 12.
Robert Wilberly dove well according to Larry Huiras, but his dives were unofficially, as the rules stated for two divers.
Huiras added, "With him we could have placed first."
