"Hector Cornejo was an inspiration, he always had a good attitude," said administrative justice instructor Jeff Hislop.

"Cornejo brought honesty, integrity, and commitment to this community," commented the coordinator of Public Safety Jared Zwickey.

Hector Cornejo, Jr. died Thursday, Jan. 27, following a nine-year battle with bone cancer. Cornejo was husband to Maureen, and father of four, sons Robert, Chris, and daughters Cindy and Christine.

Jan. 10 marked the fifth year of Cornejo's services to Delta College.

Prior to his being hired at Delta, his position as POST academy instructor was temporarily filled by many people.

When Cornejo started instructing in the academy, he became the permanent instructor. He was the only one with the proper qualifications for the job.

"Hector was such a dedicated officer that he would have moments of silence in the classroom for fallen officers," said Zwickey. "Students who knew him will benefit from a lot of his moral values, ethics, and his fair treatment of people."

When asked about one of the things he remembers most about Cornejo, Hislop replied, "Hector was more concerned about his students than his illness."

Cornejo knew he was dying and contacted people to help him plan his funeral so a burden wouldn't be placed upon his family.

A rosary service was held Feb. 1 at Callahan's Mortuary in Livermore. Viewing took place from 5-7 p.m., and was immediately followed by a rosary service.

His funeral was held Feb. 2 at Saint Ramon's Church in Dublin, Burial services followed at a cemetery near Callahan's Mortuary.

All of the pall bearers at Cornejo's funeral were former students. Lodi sent an honor guard.

"We will all miss him," said Hislop.

"Hector will be hard to replace," said Zwickey.

"I'd like students to know that when you become familiar with an instructor, look beyond the teacher and look at the person," said Hislop. "I'm not sad because he's in a better place."
