In his 15 seasons as head coach of men's golf, Coach Van Sweet seems optimistic on his outlook for his 2005 season.

"We have a fair ball club," Sweet says on his comparison to the other teams in the league. But Sweet says that balance is the key for their success this season.

"We're only as good as our weakest player," said Sweet. Men's golf has a rich history in winning, taking home seven championships in the past 15 years, and placing runner-up twice in the state. But the team hasn't had much luck in their past seasons, finishing a disappointing fifth out of seven in the league last year.

But with two returning players, Steve Meyer and Josh Harrison, the men's golf team looks foreword to a more prosperous season.

"Sierra looks like our toughest team this year as every year, but with Meyer and Harrison and our newcomers, we can pan it out," said Sweet. He also thinks that American River will be a tough rival as well, "but our goal this season is to try and beat every team we play."

Sweet is apprehensive about his new players stating, "You never know about our newcomers and how they will do in games and do under pressure, but if they do what they do in practice then it will be easy for us to win games"

This season the team would like to improve on their game, and show their opponents what they are capable of doing. Sweet says this has been the best preseason practice the team has had in a long time, and hopes that what they do in practice will carry over in games.

This season the men's golf team hopes to rise to the occasion, adding to their rich history by bringing home another league championship or just finishing in the top three, where the top three teams will advance to the regional playoffs.
