Steve Wichman MPV, Gary Barlow coach of the year, eight members on first team and three honorable mentions from our 2004 football team

Delta's football team is the home of the Bay Valley Conference MVP, coach of the year, eight first-team members, and three honorable mentions.

Mustang quarterback Steve Wichman got the most valuable offensive player honor with 223 of 364 completed passes for 2,802 yards and 20 touchdowns, according to head coach Gary Barlow.

Barlow was named the coach of the year.

Joining Wichman on the first team are running back Maurice Dotson, wide receivers Gilbert Martinez and Justin Huey, offensive linemen Reagan Mauia and David Gutierrez, defensive back Wendell Brown, linebacker Mark Rubalcaba and defensive lineman Steve Dunnigan. Defensive back Keon Gaither, linebacker Bruce Tivao and defensive lineman Barryn Davis won honorable mentions.



Volleyball



The Lady Mustangs stomped all over Los Medanos, beating them 30-5, 30-6, 30-8 Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Marcopulos Gym, stretching their winning streak to 117-consecutive conference-matches and nine league titles in a row.

Los Medanos gave it their all with only six players, and no substitutions.

Delta didn't waste any time adding the final win of the season, giving the Los Medanos Mustangs no chance to score, ending the first game in 14 minutes, where only two of their five points were earned.

The Lady Mustangs (Delta) made 35 aces, while sophomores Katie Hoag led with 10, Sarah Buhr had nine and Jen Emerson seven. Freshman Karen Kroplin led Delta with 11 kills.



Women's basketball



Delta trampled the Modesto Pirates 68-39, Wednesday, Nov. 17. They went into the half only ahead by one, but outscored Modesto 39-11 in the second, and outrebounded them 40-30.

Kristy Urbick, Elyse Garcia, and Kathreen Noa combined for all eight of the Lady Mustang's three-pointers, and scored 14, 13 and 11 points. Cassie Butler had five of the Delta's 23 steals.

Sammy Jew led the Lady Mustangs with 7-8 from the free-throw line and 19 points to beat Shasta 76-50 Friday, Nov. 19 at home.

Jennifer Layton scored 16 points and made 10 rebounds. Butler and Noa made four steals each in the victory over Shasta.

According to head coach Gina Johnson, Delta's defense made Shasta turn over the ball 29 times.



Men's basketball



Delta beat Merced 85-69 Friday, Nov. 19 with Sam Kirby leading them, scoring 21 points and 9-10 from the free throw line.

Chris Walker made 15 points, Kyle Huggett 14 and Jared Cozad 13.
