"I hope so," said Charles Jennings, Chairperson of the Fine Arts Division when asked if the L.H. Horton Jr. Gallery was going to remain open.

Last year the gallery received about $10,000 in funds; this year because of budget cuts, including Partnership for Excellence funds, this years budget was only about $3,000.

The operation money is nearly depleted.

"I'll find a way," said Jennings, when asked about how he'll be able to keep the art gallery open.

The gallery has applied for a grant from the Stockton Arts Commission, also the Associated Student Body Government gave the art gallery some funds last year.

The gallery's roots are traced to winter of 1969.

At that time the Art Department founded the Artists in Residence program. This program enabled Northern California's artists to work with students, which generated the momentum needed to establish an official exhibition space on campus.

In 1975 the San Joaquin Delta College Fine Arts Gallery was founded to promote professional and contemporary art. The gallery functioned successfully until 1988, when the space was reconditioned for non-arts usage. Because of the lack of financial support the gallery closed in 1997.

In the fall of 2000 the gallery was remodeled and the Board of Trustees made a commitment to permanently re-open it.

The gallery is a member of the College Art Association and supports the arts advocacy of the Stockton Arts Commission and the California Arts Council.

The gallery is a non-profit organization and a premier exhibition space in the city of Stockton.

The gallery primarily promotes quality and culturally diverse artwork in support of our student's education and the community at large.

The gallery also offers excellent exhibition opportunities in the Central Valley near Sacramento and San Francisco to artists, lenders and guest curators.

The art gallery exhibits work in all media with no thematic or geographic restrictions and offers annual student exhibitions in the spring semester.
