It seems many teachers at Delta hide in their offices or classrooms. This makes it difficult for students to decide which classes and teachers to take.
Nelson K. Nagai is a teacher that was has elected to become well known.
Nagai has received a Bachelors from Political Science obtained at Stanford University a masters in economics from UC Davis.
Nagai started at Delta as a tutor. He was asked then to teach part-time, and later became a full-time teacher. He has been at Delta for 22 years, but only 18 years full-time. Nagai teaches Economics 1A (Macro), Economics 1B (Micro) and History 34 (Asian Pacific American History).
Nagai likes to teach because it keeps his perspective fresh and young and enjoys being at Delta because he likes the physical beauty of the campus; Nagai does not like the fact that there is no school spirit, and that some groups do not get along with others.
Nagai considers himself as a teacher being in the middle of somewhere.
"I have had some good teachers and I am not one of them," Nagai said.
If students decide to take one of his classes, Nagai expects students to think and practice what they learn in class.
"He is a great teacher... you can understand what he is talking about because he relates things that happen in today's world to what we learn in class," Trent Sharp said.
Sharp, a business marketing major, said that Nagai talks a lot, but explains different situations that make the class more interesting and more understandable.
Nagai recommends students develop and practice math skills in order to succeed in Delta and in their life.
Nagai is a smart teacher and expects students to pay attention and participate in class. His examples of economic theories are related to contemporaneous events in the world, so students can apply those theories easily outside college.
"Your job is to make everyone else's job easier," Nagai said.
Nagai is also an adviser for the VSA Club (Vietnamese Students Association). He is an excellent and very helpful advisor. Who has been helping for more than a year already.
"Nagai likes to be around students and support them for cultural activities," Kei Kuno said.
At ratemyproffessors.com, previous students of Nagai have said that his lectures are examples of the real world. He uses humor in his lectures and he grades exams using a curve. His tests are hard but completing homework to understand the class. Nagai's overall quality is 3.4 out of 5.0.
