lyrics...Talib Kweli comes into mind. Kweli, under Rawkus Records since the 90s, has always been recognized and respected for his lyrics which are full of emotion, depth, and intelligence. Jay-Z spoke of him in one of his profound tracks, "Moment of Clarity," and Common once described Eternal Reflection as the new GangStarr.
Kweli met DJ/Producer Hi Tek in 1994 on a trip to Cincinnati and formed Reflection Eternal. This lineup changed, with the entrance of Mos Def, into Black Star. Mos Def is a close friend of Kweli, once studying the art of theater together.
According to MTV.com, Talib is an Arabian name meaning, "the seeker or student," while his last name is a Ghanaian name meaning " of truth or knowledge."
Kweli definitely lives up to his name; wisdom and truth are two meaningful words which also describe Kweli's album, "The Beautiful Struggle," released on Sept. 28. The title, "The Beautiful Struggle," was mentioned by Mos Def through recording sessions.
Kweli's first single is entitled, "I Try," which features Mary J. Blige. I first listened to the track on allhiphop.com a month ago, and then anticipated his album produced by the infamous Kanye West and the beautiful piano melody is played by John Legend. The track is a tribute to 9-5 hard workers who struggle and survive, facing obstacles every day.
"The Beautiful Struggle" met all expectations. Kweli's lyrics of poverty, politics, love, and life are heartfelt and profound.
He speaks the truth others don't dare mention, which so many can relate to; one personal favorite is "Around My Way," featuring John Legend.
"The Beautiful Struggle" has guest appearances by Faith Evans, Res, John Legend, Common, Anthony Hamilton, and Mary J. Blige.
Producers of range from Kanye West, Neptunes, Hi Tek, Just Blaze, and Dave "Supa Star" West.
Throughout hip hop, consciousness has been sought through lyrics and beats...Talib Kweli is an MC who speaks of life with wisdom and contributes to the consciousness in hip hop.
