Fact: The one dollar student representation fee is an optional tax that is used solely for student body representation. Any withdrawal taken from this account must be approved by the Student Government and found to be legitimate by the administration.
I wonder how shocked these student will be when they transfer to a U.C. and have to pay a mandatory $105 (U.C. Davis) a year in associated student body government fees.
Fact: SJDC has one of the only community college student governments in the nation that runs their own business grossing over $400k a year. Yes, their own business with student employees compensated with an hourly wage and assistance with their books and tuition that's run by board members on our Student Government.
Fact: Every board member on the ASBG (minus student trustee) is a volunteer with no hourly pay or salary. Each officer puts in approximately 20-30, sometimes even 40 hours per week of their free time. Anyone who tells you otherwise wasn't working hard enough.
This is opposite to our administration that is compensated quite well to serve the students. But of course they have different tasks like cutting classes, adjusting class times to say, 8 AM from 8:30 AM, keeping a comfy reserve around 5 percent of the districts annual budget, and cutting maintenance jobs which makes our campus dirty (yes this is the reason for delta's messy campus and classrooms, just ask any janitor).
However, unlike our administration and board of trustee's (who are rarely criticized), the Student Government isn't perfect and would be quick to admit so. Let's have Students Demanding Action (SDA) come up with some good ideas on what to use the rep. fee and the Flea Market budget for. Any club or organization is free to fill out a form requesting funds, however protesting the organization as a whole and throwing out false accusations is not going to help your chances in getting what you want.
It's the administration that demands more criticism, they feed 100 percent off of your tax dollars. The Student Government optional tax accounts for less than five percent of their total revenue. Perhaps students should be demanding action from their administrative employees rather than their peers and allies.
