The Mustangs looked good after beating Cabrillo and Ohlone, but stumbled when they lost in double overtime verses Pasadena, then finished fourth after a loss to Foothill in the William K. Antilla Tournament in the June Fergusson Pool.

They advanced to the semifinals after beating Cabrillo 10-4, and Ohlone 15-8 Friday, Sept 17.

Nick Thomas led for Delta with three goals, and Derrick Davis scored two. Goalie Zach Barnes saved seven potential goals in the first game.

"It's really nice to have a good team. It helps us four sophomores," said David Rexroth.

Rexroth came out with three goals for the Mustangs, where Andy Brooks, Sean Swanson, Thomas Dietrich and Camron Herberle made two apiece in game two.

"This second game was much better game," said head coach Larry Hurais. "We were focused."

Delta went on to play Pasadena Saturday morning in the June Fergusson Pool.

With the championship game on the line, Delta started off slowly, but was starting to come back.

"They played really well, but we were down 4-0 in the first," said Hurias.

The Mustangs tied the game at six by the half, but Pasadena swam past by scoring two more in the third.

Once in the fourth, Delta knew they had to start making goals, and Brooks tied up the game at nine, forcing the game to go into overtime.

"The kids fought back," said Hurias.

They would begin sudden death with three-minute quarters, and switch after each new quarter.

Just in the first overtime, Delta made two turnovers and kept the crowd on their feet, but at the end of the fifth the score was still 9-9.

Going into double overtime, people were ready on many accounts to jump for joy or fall to defeat. With less than one minute left, Pasadena scored and the game was over, 10-9. Delta was left out of the championship game.

"They hit shots right at the goalie and couldn't put it away," said Hurias.

Mike Iles topped Delta with three goals and Brooks with two against Pasadena.

"I'm doing everything I can for my team," said Iles. "It comes from everyone. Without the other players, I couldn't get the goals."

They had to face Foothill in the game determining who got third and who would get fourth.

K.C. Drake made the first goal for Delta, but after three goals in the first and second by Foothill, they were down by five going into the half.

Thomas, and Rexroth scored to cut the lead to three, but Foothill made three more in the fourth, shortly before Chris Tunquist made the final goal for the Mustangs to end the game 9-4.

"We played well with Pasadena, but flat as pancakes in this game," said Hurais.

Barnes made 15 saves in the loss to Foothill.

"He (Barnes) kept us in the ballgame," said Hurais.

"They're a great defense, and it's puts the pressure off of me," said Barnes.

Delta settled for fourth in thier tournament, Foothill third, Pasadena City second and Merced first for the second year in a row.
