Finally, on the fourth game and match point they achieved their goal beating the Cougars 25-18, 26-24, Saturday, Sept. 18.
"It's been a two-year drought," said head coach Brad Friesen. "It's the first step in achieving our ultimate goal."
Delta defeated Modesto College 25-14, 25-17 in their first match. Hartnell was the Lady Mustangs' next victim, smashing them 25-5, 25-12.
"We're getting our feet wet," said Friesen. "The next match will be a good test,"
Taft was their next opponent, proving to be a worthy adversary. The Lady Mustangs won 25-18, 25-17.
"We distributed the ball very well," said Friesen. "They are really hungry to play volleyball."
In this third pool match, Karen Kroplin led Delta with nine kills. Cindy Stayton, Sarah Buhr, and Nicole Lubell each recorded five kills.
Jordanne Brenkwitz, their defensive specialist, recorded 10 digs in two games.
"That's phenomenal," said Friesen.
In the championship bracket, Delta beat Solano College 25-16, 25-19.
Defending champion Sacramento City College fell to the Lady Mustangs 25-15, 25-23.
The Cougars were once again their foe in the championship match. Play after play, Delta and Taft battled with kills, digs, and blocks.
Jennifer Emerson provided a dig, and upon the Cougar's return, Buhr and Stayton blocked it for the 24th point. Buhr tapped it over to win game one 25-14.
"To dominate our own tournament feels great," said All-Tournament Team member, Buhr.
Game two found the Lady Mustangs leading 15-10. To keep the team alert, Co-Captian Buhr shouted out, "Keep pushing Delta; don't let up!"
Delta had the crowd on edge with the score 24-21, but let Taft tie it up 24-24. The Lady Mustangs rallied to victory 26-24.
"We wanted it really bad," said All-Tournament Team member Katie Hoag.
Delta Classic MVP Stayton recorded 46 kills and seven aces. Kroplin made 33 kills and six blocks. Buhr recorded 31 kills and 33 digs. Hoag made 49 assists. Breanne Zellmer had 22 kills.
"I definitely think we played with intensity and a lot of heart," said Stayton.
