For a woman who first performed her play in the basement of a café in downtown New York, Eve Ensler is doing pretty well.

Her production "Vagina Monologues" comes to Delta's Atherton Auditorium Oct. 7 as part of CAP's month-long celebration of Stop Violence Against Women.

"Vagina Monologues," an internationally renowned play, has grown tremendously and has been shown at universities and colleges across the country.

Recently produced at UOP, its debut at Delta has finally arrived in the form of videotape. Speech instructor Vicki Marie said the version will put the play "...into context.

She explains her creation, along with its sociological and political meanings."

Marie is a founder of the CAP program hosting the showing of "Vagina Monologues," among other events in a series called "Uncrossing Double XX's."

She serves on the cultural awareness committee that aims to bring four to five cultural events to Delta every semester.

When asked what message she felt students should take away with them after viewing the play, Marie made it clear that viewers should decide that for themselves.

"Everyone has their own perception, and should take what's meaningful to them," said Marie.

"It's so multidimensional, with lots of humor...Every woman can relate to it."

The play is also filled with cultural taboos involved with women's culture, Marie said. Although she considers herself a progressive woman, she admitted to being a bit embarrassed after seeing it at UC Davis.

But as Marie also pointed out, "It's not just about the play anymore, it's become a movement for educating, motivating and exercising rights."

Stop Violence Against women is otherwise known as "V-day," and according to the Vagina Monologues official website, http://www.vaginamonologues.com, "V" stands for vote.

After the video, audience members will have the opportunity to hear a panel discuss the film, and pose questions of their own.
